Three days stretched like aged parchment at Heritage Hall, each hour marked by the steady tick of the restored Victorian clock above the main entrance. Emily found herself developing new routines to fill the quiet moments at her booth – arranging and rearranging her tools, creating elaborate paper flower displays that few stopped to admire, and checking her email with increasing frequency for word from Morton.

The third morning dawned with autumn mist clinging to the hall's towering windows, transforming the early light into a watercolor wash of amber and rose. Emily sat at her workstation, watching her laptop screen remain stubbornly empty of messages while Ruby prepared their daily demonstrations with determined cheerfulness.

"Perhaps we should try something more interactive today," Ruby suggested, her tone bright as she laid out supplies for paper marbling, the morning light glinting off the jars of swirling pigments. "The medieval manuscript expert said his audiences always perk up when they can participate."

Emily nodded absently, her attention drawn to Benjamin's booth across the aisle where he was cautiously unpacking new additions to his collection. The morning light caught his silver hair as he worked, lending him the air of a dedicated curator in a private museum.

"I think I'll ask Benjamin about his latest acquisitions," Emily said, straightening her vintage-style dress – today's featuring tiny golden compasses along the collar. "His knowledge of historical bindings has been invaluable for understanding the evolution of craft techniques."

Benjamin welcomed her with his usual warmth, already reaching for a fine example of Victorian bookbinding. "You have excellent timing," he said, timidly lifting the volume from its protective case. "This just arrived – an 1845 edition with fascinating structural elements."

Emily accepted the book with proper reverence, her trained fingers noting subtle details in the binding. The leather felt slightly different from what she'd expect in a pre-mass production volume, and the stitching showed a uniformity that sparked something in her professional memory. But Benjamin's enthusiastic explanation of the restoration work required to preserve such pieces pushed aside her half-formed observations.

His extensive knowledge of historical practices impressed Emily, though something about his descriptions occasionally struck her as textbook-precise rather than practically learned.
